Regulations, Resistances & Reconciliations: Histories of Education

SASKATOON, SK, 23-26 OCTOBER 2014

CHEA/ACHE invites proposals for its 2014 conference, sponsored by the College of Education at the University of Saskatchewan. The conference theme is “Regulations, Resistances and Reconciliations: Histories of Education.” In addressing these “Three Rs,” conference presenters and attendees will explore whether regulation, resistance and/or reconciliation are significant concepts in understanding change and continuity in the history of formal and informal education. Presentations might address questions such as:

  • In what ways have social, political, economic and/or cultural regulations shaped education and schooling?
  • Whose rules regulated and in what ways did resistance to regulation influence educational reform?
  • Were regulators and resisters reconciled? If so, how?
  • In what ways did reconciliation affect education and schooling in particular times and/or particular places?

CHEA/ACHE welcomes proposals on all subjects in the history of education from graduate students and scholars both inside and outside the academy. We encourage individual papers or panels that address educational topics from an historical perspective. CHEA/ACHE also invites contributions to the Thousand Words in a Picture session. We welcome proposed presentations that consist of a photograph of an artifact, a place or an image and a short paper (maximum 1000 words) analyzing the picture’s historical significance and relevance to the conference theme. The picture will be projected during the delivery of the paper. Please indicate at the top of the abstract that it is intended for the Thousand Words in a Picture session rather than a regular conference paper session. This special session will take place during the opening of the Conference on the evening of October 23rd.
